<from Mr. Joe Yurso>
I have been working VADM Al Konetzni and RADM Clark Orzalli and others to establish a Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery for USS Thresher. We started with a letter writing campaign to the director of the cemetery, which was very successful. We had thousands of letters including over 500 that were turned in at the 55th Annual service in Kittery on 7 April. We just started fundraising - so am trying to get the word out to anyone I know who might have an interest. If you have received this request from another source - I apologize for filling your inbox.
Although the monument is not very expensive, we also have to have funding for "perpetual care" so that it never becomes a burden to the taxpayer. We also have formed a 501c3, have submitted, but have not yet achieved our status with the IRS. Once this occurs donations will be retroactively be tax deductible.
Unfortunately, we cannot wait. Arlington is space constrained and our indications are that they will change the rules again for erecting a monument in non-burial areas like those that ours is planned for. We have been encouraged to submit our package in July for the next docket of the review board in August/September.

I am concerned that this might be the last chance to get a monument to the
129 who perished over 55 years ago. I know it would be appropriate to have a monument to them and their SUBSAFE legacy in our Nations Cemetery.
